Curriculum Information
Math - The math program that we use in Pleasant Valley is called Everyday Mathematics and it was developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project. Sixth grade Everyday Mathematics emphasizes the following content strands: numeration, operations and computation, data and chance, geometry, measurement and reference frames, and patterns, functions, and algebra. The program emphasizes a problem solving approach based on everyday situations that develops critical thinking. A spiral approach is used in teaching the content that revisits topics regularly to ensure full concept development.
Social Studies - The social studies program that we use in Pleasant Valley is called History Alive by Teachers' Curriculum Institute. Sixth grade social studies focuses on world history. We will start off the year studying early people and their life ways. As the year progresses we will be covering such topics as Ancient Egypt, Ancient India, Ancient Rome, Ancient Greece, The Holocaust, and many other interesting topics. We also spend time covering current events from around the state, country, and world. Reading - The district literacy framework includes several key components. Including content based on the Iowa Common Core. Instruction is given in both whole class and small, flexible groups. Instruction is balanced between literature and informational text. Writing - Our writing instruction is based on the Iowa Common Core writing standards. We also incorporate various types of writing, such as: compare/contrast, persuasive, and expository writing. Students use 6 traits components to enhance their writing. These include: ideas, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, organization, and conventions. |
